"Now Boarding" 2011 Production
I was feeling quite nervous this year, anticipating this year’s concert. Our 2010 “The Circus of the bitter, sweet and twisted” was so highly talked about, it left the Dance to the Music audience wondering how we would top it?
After a jam packed photo week and day rehearsal, teachers prepared for our vision to take the real stage. Some very late nights, multiple staff meetings and a few adjustments to tweak our show, concert day was upon us.
Full of anticipation and expectation for what the staff and students of Dance to the Music would present this year, the audience had their passports and were ushered into the auditorium. With the “lift house curtain, go” our world trip began.
Visiting all the continents, guided by our very quirky and humorous airline pilot and airhostesses, we explored the many artistic cultures of our world.
Our students immersed themselves in the nationalities and cultures that themed each routine and truly understood the concepts and uniqueness of each performance. They did not simply dance to the music, they learnt, they understood and they embraced. Congratulations on your dynamic and vibrant performances. With such strong technique and showmanship coming through the various routines, it made myself and your teachers very happy!
Our Concert Creative Team spent days and days meeting together selecting themes, music and fine tuning concepts. Hours were spent in the staff room and at home organising props, sorting, bagging and labelling costumes - Miss Rachael was editing music, Miss Marissa was plotting the stage, Miss Hannah was sourcing props, Miss Isabel at the sewing machine. Teachers stepped up and took on anything they could to assist in preparing for this production. For some of our teachers, this was their first insight into the mammoth task of co-ordinating a concert production. Happy, keen and helpful, our team worked in sync, often finishing each other’s sentences and having the same internal thoughts. We kept ourselves and each other calm, motivated and on-target right the way through! Go us!!!!
I can see the bonds between teachers getting stronger and stronger; this makes me the most proud! I remember when you were my babies and now you are talented dancers, dedicated teachers and beautiful young woman. I feel incredibly blessed to have you in my life. You are wonderful role models to your students, yes you teach them to dance, but you also demonstrate good morals and a respectful attitude, you show support and encouragement to your peers and have a genuine, non-competitive personality. As a mum, I see the value in this above and beyond simply teaching a child to dance. You really show your love for dance, for your students and your dedication and support to me. Your contributions made our production complete and I truly am grateful to you all. I have a lot of dance principal friends, all of whom are envious of the support and dedication I have from my staff.
To our volunteer grade mums, what a mammoth task you had. The show runs so smoothly for the audience but it is stressed, organised chaos backstage. There is a lot to co-ordinate and prepare and teachers could not do it without help!!! Carla and Sue thank you for managing our groups backstage and checking everyone was in order and ready to go. Our grade mums took such great care of our dancers and all were dressed and cared for.
Our wonderful guest Artists, Daniel McNamara and Eileen Wallace (state and national Irish Champions for the Wollongong Irish dance Academy) there no words to describe how utterly gobsmacked we were with your performance. As dancers we understand the strength and ability Irish dance requires, but we honestly all stood in the wings with our eyes wide. You were brilliant!
It was wonderful to have some familiar faces on our concert stage. Miss Natalie was joined by Justin, Miss Allanah and Leanne as our show commentator’s (pilot and air hostesses) and were most entertaining. Justin’s accents were awesome and our pre-flight safety check was very interesting!
As always, I cannot believe the magnitude of beautiful comments I have received since the curtain dropped! You have no idea how much it means to me (and the team) to hear you enjoyed our production and appreciated the ideas and work that went in. We put our heart and soul into our show and literally live and breathe concert! It takes over our complete thought process 100% of the day and priorities like family, eating and a social life take a big backseat. It is mentally and physically exhausting but we thrive!! We are absolutely thrilled with the success of our 2011 production, but I can’t tell you how much that feeling magnifies when we hear it directly from the audience! We are so pleased you were entertained!!!
Thank you for taking this trip with us, we trust you enjoyed your flight and we will see you again soon!
All my love, Miss Hayley
